Biomakers are useful in early diagnosis and monitoring of the gastrointestinal tumor
Gastrointestinal neoplasms are among the main causes of death for cancer all over the world. Like all tumors, they are characterised by an accumulation of mutations that lead to the inactivation of tumor suppressor genes or to the activation of oncogenes. Progress in molecular biology techniques allowed a more accurate analysis of tumors genetic profile using innovative technologies, such us the new generation sequencing (NGS), which lead to the development of targeted therapeutic approaches based on molecular biomarkers. Over the past 10 years, huge progresses have been made in the development of targeted therapies for advanced oncology patients and many treatments, associated with molecular biomarkers, dedicated to patients affected by gastrointestinal cancer are under development
